The IMS Study Group Auditory History has announced a new term of activities. The annual programme is organised in two semesters (September to December and February to June) and consists of general assemblies, colloquia, reading groups, and workshops. For detailed description of each, consult the Guidelines for Contributors section.
The participation in the events is open to everyone: there is no obligation to be an official member of the IMS or the Study Group. To obtain the Zoom-link for the events, please contact the chairs of the group via email.

Margret Scharrer (Bern): … c’estoit ung grant merveille à pensser…: Power, Sound, and Ritual at the Burgundian Court
Colloquium | October 28, 2025 | 16-17 CET | ONLINE
The colloqium will investigate how did sound organise authority at the Burgundian court, investigate power, sound, and ritual as mutually reinforcing practices. Through chronicles, ordinances, images, and spaces, Margret Scharrer will trace how sound and music shaped perception, obedience, and memory.
Reading Sound and Literature

Despite its fundamental role as a historical source, literature is rarely discussed within cultural sound studies. This autumn’s reading-group session will focus on recent contributions that explore the relationship between the written and auditory worlds. The discussion will open a broader conversation about how to write about sound and how sonic experience shapes literary creation.
Julia Samp (Aachen), Hannah Potthof (Chemnitz): Historical Perspectives on Medieval Sound(s) and Soundscapes
Colloquium | December 10, 2025 | 16-18 CET | ONLINE
How do historians concieve sound, think about it, and do sound research? What can other disciplines, namely musicology, learn from historians’ approach? These questions will be addressed through two project presentations by Hannah Potthoff and Julia Samp, who will present their dissertation projects considering medieval auditory perception, interpretation, and tradition. Their dissertations projects were funded by two DFG-funded projects, “Belliphonie im Mittelalter” (TU Chemnitz, 2021-2024) and “Lärm vor Dezibel” (RWTH Aachen University, 2022-2025).
