Job: Assistant Professor in Narrativity and (Inter)mediality in the Arts (Groningen)

Job description

The Arts, Culture and Media programme of the University of Groningen is looking for a highly motivated full-time Assistant Professor (Dutch: Universitair Docent) in Narrativity and (Inter)mediality in the Arts, preferably with an expertise in popular music, sound studies, theater or performing arts.

Period of appointment: 1 August 2019 – 1 August 2022.

The candidate is expected to have a broad expertise in narrative theory, narratology, media theory, and media philosophy, if possible with an emphasis on popular music, sound, theater or performing arts. The position combines teaching (60%) and research (40%). The candidate will (co-)teach BA core modules on intermediality in the arts and narrativity across media in the Arts, Culture and Media bachelor’s programme, potentially also in one or more of the tracks in the Arts and Culture’s master’s programme. The language of instruction is English.

The successful candidate will become a temporary staff member of the Arts, Culture and Media programme, which is responsible for the bachelor’s programme ‘Arts, Culture and Media’ as well as four tracks in the master’s programme ‘Arts and Culture’ (‘Film and Contemporary Audiovisual Media’; ‘Music, Theatre and Performance Studies’; ‘Arts Policy and Cultural Entrepreneurship’; ‘Arts, Cognition and Criticism’). It currently has 17 permanent staff members, three of which focus on narrativity across media and intermediality in the arts, and six of which focus on (popular) music and theater. Our highly international staff comprises colleagues from the Netherlands, Germany, the US, Canada, Mexico, Hungary, Greece and Denmark. The BA programme has an annual enrolment of around 100-120 students from all parts of the world; the MA programme – voted the best of its kind in the Netherlands in 2018 – accepts between 30 and 40 national and international students every year.

Research is conducted within the Groningen Institute for the Study of Culture, https://www.rug.nl/research/icog/?lang=en (ICOG) and its research centre Arts in Society, https://www.rug.nl/(…)ntres/artsinsociety/. ICOG provides ample support in applying for bids with national and international funding agencies. There is also an annual travel budget for conference participations and other research related trips.

The successful applicant is expected to:

  • teach and supervise students in the department’s undergraduate and graduate programmes
  • participate actively in curriculum development, design and administration of course modules, under the responsibility of the head of department
  • carry out and eventually also generate high-quality research in the field of narrativity and intermediality in the arts; preferably in relation to popular music, sound, theater or the performing arts
  • participate actively in international research networks
  • participate in the activities of the interdisciplinary research centre Arts in Society and one of its theme groups (such as ‘Music, Sound and Culture’, ‘Art, Medium and Moving Images,’ ‘Narrative in/and Art,’ or ‘Arts, Culture and Cognition’).


Qualifications

In addition to a number of basic requirements set by the University of Groningen, such as excellent social and communication skills, presentation skills, coaching skills and a results-oriented attitude, we are looking for candidates who have

  • acquired a PhD in a relevant field (or will have received the PhD by 1 August 2019)
  • a good research track record, including relevant book and article publications
  • teaching experience at university level and proven didactic abilities
  • gained the Dutch University Teaching Qualification (BKO) or is prepared to do so within a year
  • the motivation to acquire third-party funding on the national or international level
  • a relevant national and international academic network
  • the willingness to contribute to the development of the department’s research and educational programmes
  • organisational experience and skills
  • international experience
  • prepared to foster inclusive learning environments
  • demonstrably good command of English (at least CEFR B2/C1 level for reading, listening, writing and speaking)
  • the willingness to learn Dutch (teaching, however, will be conducted exclusively in English).


Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary based on qualifications and experience of between € 3,637 (salary scale 11 Dutch Universities) and € 5,656 (scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position. The gross salary is excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favourable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The appointment will be on a temporary basis for three years. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).
